พบว่ารากมีแอลคาลอยด์ Reserpine ซึ่งมีฤทธิ์ลดความดันโลหิต และกล่อมประสาท อาการข้างเคียงของการใช้ยานี้คือ ทำให้ฝันร้าย ซึมเศร้า คัดจมูก (2)

การทดสอบความเป็นพิษ พบว่าเมื่อให้สารสกัดส่วนของพืชที่อยู่เหนือดินด้วยเอทานอลและน้ำ ฉีดเข้าช่องท้องของหนูถีบจักร ขนาดที่ทำให้สัตว์ทดลองตายครึ่งหนึ่งคือ 0.75 กรัม/กิโลกรัม (6)
