ดอก : มีสีเขียวอมแดงเลือดหมู หรือสีขาวอมเขียว ออกเป็นกระจุก หรือเป็นช่อ ประมาณ 15-20 ดอก คล้ายดอกขจร [1]

ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อ มักออกที่ปลายยอด หรือตามง่ามใบใกล้ๆ ปลายยอดมี 3-20 ดอก กลีบรองกลีบดอกสีเขียวอมเหลือง มีสีแดงกระจาย เชื่อมติดกันเป็นรูปท่อ ยาว 1-1.5 ซม. ปลายแยกเป็นแฉก รูปสามเหลี่ยมแกมรูปไข่ มี 4-5 พู ยาวประมาณ 2 มม. กลีบดอก เชื่อมติดกันคล้ายเป็นหมวก ก้านเกสรผู้ยาว 3-7 มม. รังไข่มี 2-3 ห้อง แต่ละห้องมีไข่อ่อนจำนวนมาก ท่อเกสรเมียยาวประมาณ 3 มม. ยอดเกสรเมียแบ่งเป็น 2 พูู [6]

ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อที่ซอกใบ กลีบดอกสีขาวและร่วงง่าย กลีบเลี้ยงและฐานดอกสีแดง หนา แข็ง [2] [8] [9]

ต้น : เป็นพรรณไม้ยืนต้นขนาดเล็ก ลำต้นมีความสูง ราว 9-15 เมตร ผิวของมันเป็นสีเหลืองน้ำตาล [1]

ต้น : เป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลาง สูง 5-10 ม. เปลือกสีน้ำตาลอ่อน เรียบ ทุกส่วนเกลี้ยง กิ่งก้านเป็นรูปทรงกระบอกค่อยๆ เปลี่ยนเป็นสีน้ำตาลเทาอ่อนๆ [6]

ต้น : ไม้ยืนต้น สูง 5-10 เมตร [2] [8] [9]

ถิ่นที่พบ : พบมากบริเวณเกาะสุมาตรา เกาะทะเลอินเดีย เกาะมอล็อกกา ประเทศอเมริกา ประเทศแอฟริกา ประเทศบราซิล และประเทศไทย [14]

ผล : ผลสด รูปไข่กลับแกมรูปรี ยาว 2-2.5 ซม. สีแดงเข้ม [6]

ผล : มีสีน้ำตาลเข้ม มีขนาดยาวประมาณ 1 ซม. และมีขนาดยาวประมาณ 1 ซม. และมีเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางประมาณ 0.3-0.4 ซม. [1]

ผล : เป็นผลสด รูปไข่ [2] [8] [9]

ใบ : มีสีเขียวเข้ม ผิวของใบเรียบมัน ค่อนข้างหนา ใบยาวประมาณ 4 นิ้ว กว้างประมาณ 2 นิ้ว รูปลักษณะของมันปลายและโคนใบแหลม เป็นรูปยาวรี [1]

ใบ : เป็นใบเดี่ยว ออกตรงข้ามกัน รูปขอบขนานแกมไข่กลับ กว้าง 3-5 ซม. ยาว 7-12 ซม. ปลายแหลมโคนสอบแคบเป็นรูปลิ่ม มันเป็นเงา ด้านล่างมีต่อมหนาแน่น เมื่อแห้งสีน้ำตาลอมเทาอ่อน เส้นใบมีจำนวน มากขนานกัน เห็นไม่ชัดทั้งสองด้าน แต่บางทีเห็นชัดด้านบน มีเส้นเรียบขอบใบ ก้านใบยาว 1-2 ซม. เล็กเรียว [6]

ใบ : เป็นใบเดี่ยว เรียงตรงข้าม รูปวงรีหรือรูปใบหอก กว้าง 2.5-4 ซม. ยาว 6-10 ซม. ขอบเป็นคลื่น ใบอ่อนสีแดงหรือน้ำตาลแดง เนื้อใบบาง ค้อนข้างเหนียว ผิวมัน [2] [8] [9]

ห้ามใช้ในผู้เป็นไข้ อาเจียน ร้อนใน ห้ามใช้กานพลูร่วมกับว่านนางคำ เนื่องจากกานพลูจะถูกข่มด้วยว่านนางคำ (การแพทย์แผนจีน)

มื่อให้หนูขาวกินยูจีนอลในขนาด 1.8 ซีซี. หรือ 1.93 ก./กก. ทำให้หนูขาวตายครึ่งหนึ่งของจำนวนที่ทดลอง อาการพิษที่พบคือการเป็นอัมพาตโดยเริ่มเป็นที่ขาหลัง และกรามล่าง ส่วนการเป็นอัมพาตที่ขาหน้า จะเกิดเมื่ออาการโคม่า หรือเหนื่อยมาก ๆ อาจมีอาการช้ำรั่ว ปัสสาวะ

กานพลูในปริมาณมากทำให้เลือดแข็งตัวช้าลง ฉะนั้นต้องระวังการใช้ร่วมกับยาที่มีฤทธิ์ต้านการแข็งตัวของเลือด เช่น warfarin , aspirin, heparin ยาต้านการอักเสบชนิดไม่ใช่สเตียรอยด์ (NSAIDs; ibuprofen), สมุนไพรหรือยาที่ทำให้เกล็ดเลือดต่ำ และยาลดน้ำตาลในเลือด

ผู้ผลิตบางรายได้นำกานพลูมาทำเป็นบุหรี่ หรือที่เรียกกันว่าบุหรี่กานพลู โดยมีการพัฒนาสูตรใหม่ ๆเพิ่มขึ้น ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องของรสชาติ ที่มีทั้งรสช็อกโกแลต รสบ๊วย รสวานิลลา รสผลไม้ และอื่น ๆ มากมาย แต่เหล่านี้ก็ยังถือเป็นอันตรายต่อสุขภาพอยู่ดี จึงไม่ขอแนะนำ

Clove oil is considered safe to use and generally does not have any adverse side effects. What must be kept in mind though is that clove oil is very strong, and even a topical application in an undiluted form can cause damage to the skin [41]

Dried clove can also cause mouth sensitivity and irritation, as well as damage to dental tissues.[43]

In children, clove oil is LIKELY UNSAFE to take by mouth. It can cause severe side effects such as seizures, liver damage, and fluid imbalances.[43]

Clove is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in food amounts. There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking clove in medicinal doses if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.[43]
