ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อ ช่อดอกมีสีขาวอมม่วงออกตามตุ่มใบ ที่ยอดและซอกใบ กลีบดอกสีม่วง [2] [5]

ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อฝอย มีสีขาวนวลหรือสีม่วง ออกตามง่ามใบ ดอกวงนอกเป็นดอกเพศเมีย วงในเป็นดอกสมบูรณ์เพศ ดอกวงนอกกลีบดอกยาวประมาณ 3-3.5 มม. ดอกวงในกลีบดอกเป็นรูปท่อมีความยาวประมาณ 4-6 มม. ปลายจักเป็นซี่ฟันประมาณ 5-6 ซี่ ก้านช่อดอกยาวประมาณ 2-6 มม. ไม่มีก้านดอก ริ้วประดับมีลักษณะแข็ง สีเขียว และเรียงกันประมาณ 6-7 วง วงอยู่นอกเป็นรูปไข่ วงในคล้ายรูปหอกแคบและตรงปลายแหลม [3]

ต้น : เป็นไม้พุ่ม สูง 1-2.5 เมตร ชอบขึ้นในที่ชื้นแฉะ [2] [5]

ต้น : เป็นไม้พุ่มขนาดเล็ก ลำต้นสูงประมาณ 0.5-2 เมตร แตกกิ่งก้านมากและเกลี้ยง [3]

ถิ่นที่พบ : พบขึ้นตามที่รกร้างว่างเปล่า ที่ราบลุ่มชายฝั่งทะเล ชอบดินเค็ม หรือกร่อย [5]

ผล : เป็นผลแห้ง มีรูปทรงกระบอกยาวประมาณ 0.7 มม. มีสัน 10 สัน มีระยางค์สีขาว ยาวประมาณ 4 มม. แผ่กว้าง [3]

ผล : เป็นผลแห้งไม่แตก [2] [5]

ใบ : เป็นรูปไข่กลับ ยาวประมาณ 1-5.5 ซม. กว้างประมาณ 2.5-9 ซม. ปลายใบแหลมหรือ แหลมมีติ่งสั้น ขอบใบเป็นซี่ฟันและแหลม เนื้อใบคล้ายกระดาษ ค่อนข้างเกลี้ยง ไม่มีก้าน ใบมีกลิ่นฉุน [3]

ใบ : เป็นใบเดี่ยว เรียงสลับ รูปไข่กลับ กว้าง 1-5 ซม. ยาว 2.5-10 ซม. ขอบใบหยักซี่ฟันห่างๆ โดยรอบมีขนขาวๆ ปกคลุม ก้านสั้น [2] [5]

การศึกษาทางพิษวิทยาพบว่า สารสกัดจากต้นขลู่ที่ทำให้เกิดพิษแบบเฉียบพลันมีค่า LD50 มากกว่า 5 กรัม/กิโลกรัม

อีกรายงานพบว่าสารสกัดเมทานอลของรากขลู่มีค่า LD50 มากกว่า 10 กรัม/กิโลกรัม

ผู้ที่ป่วยโรคความดันโลหิตสูงและโรคเกี่ยวกับหลอดเลือดหัวใจไม่ควรรับประทานใบขลู่ในปริมาณมาก เพราะขลู่มี sodium chloride เป็นจำนวนมาก
