ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อตั้งตรง ออกดอกที่ปลายกิ่ง ยาวประมาณ 4-6 นิ้ว ลักษณะของดอกมีกลีบรองดอก 4 กลีบ เป็นสีขาว ชนิดดอกขาวกลีบดอกขาว จุดประแดงหรือม่วงแดง สีฟ้าอมม่วง หรือสีฟ้า ชนิดดอกม่วงมักมีกลีบดอกสีม่วงอมฟ้า มีแถบเหลืองอ่อนกลางกลีบ กลีบยาวประมาณ 1-1.5 ซม. กลางดอกมีเกสรตัวผู้และตัวเมีย [3]

ดอก : เป็นช่อออกตามปลายกิ่ง ขอบใบจักหยาบ ปลายแหลมคล้ายหนาม แต่อาจพบขอบใบเรียบก็ได้ ดอกสีขาว [1]

ต้น : เป็นพรรณไม้พุ่ม ขนาดกลาง ซึ่งมีความสูงประมาณ 1-3.5 ฟุต ลักษณะของลำต้นเป็นข้อ แข็ง และมีหนามอยู่ตามข้อมีประมาณ 4 หนาม [3]

ต้น : ไม้พุ่ม ลำต้นกลมเรียบ มีหนามตามข้อๆ ละ 4 หนาม [1]

ผล : รูปไข่ สีเขียว พบขึ้นตามชายน้ำ ริมลำคลอง ที่ชุ่มชื้นทั่วไป [1]

ผล : เป็นฝัก รูปไข่หรือทรงกระบอก ปลายฝักป้าน ผิวเปลือกเป็นสีน้ำตาล ภายในฝักมีเมล็ด 4 เมล็ด [3]

ใบ : เป็นใบเดี่ยว รูปไข่ ปลายใบแหลม ขอบใบเรียบ กว้างประมาณ 1-2.5 ซม. ยาวประมาณ 3-7 ซม. ก้านใบสั้น [3]

ใบ : ใบเดี่ยว ออกตรงข้าม ผิวเรียบเป็นมัน [1]

เมื่อให้สารสกัดลำต้นแห้งด้วยปิโตรเลียมอีเทอร์ ขนาดความเข้มข้น 5 ซีซี/จานเพาะเชื้อ ไม่ทำให้เกิดการก่อกลายพันธุ์ ใน Salmonella typhimurium TA98 และ TA100 (1)

มีรายงานการใช้เหงือกปลาหมอที่ขึ้นบริเวณชายทะเลทางใต้ พบว่าไม่สามารถลดอาการคันได้ และมีอาการแพ้ในบางราย ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับทางแพทย์พื้นบ้านว่าเหงือกปลาหมอทะเล ทำให้เกิดอาการแพ้ได้
