ดอก : มีสีเหลืองออกเป็นช่อขนาดใหญ่ที่ปลายยอด ก้านช่อแข็งยาว 5-7 ซม. ใบประดับ รูปไข่กลับ ปลายแหลมยาว 5 มม. ก้านดอกย่อย ยาว 2-3 ซม.มีขน กลีบรองกลีบดอกมี 5 กลีบ กลม หนา ขนาดไม่เท่ากัน สองกลีบนอก ยาว 5 มม. สามกลีบในยาวถึง 9 มม. มีขนด้านนอก กลีบดอกมี 5 กลีบ รูปไข่กว้างยาว 1.5-2 ซม. มีก้านกลีบสั้น เกสรผู้มี 5 กลีบ รูปไข่กว้าง มีขนนุ่ม ท่อเกสรตัวเมียเกลี้ยง [3]

ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อสีเหลืองสวย [1]

ต้น : ต้นขี้เหล็กเป็นพรรณไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลางถึงขนาดใหญ่ [1]

ต้น : เป็นไม้ต้นขนาดกลาง กิ่งอ่อนมีลายตามยาว ขนละเอียดนุ่ม [3]

ถิ่นที่พบ : พบอยู่ทั่วไปในประเทศไทย ศรีลังกา และมาเลเซีย นิยมปลูกไว้เป็นไม้ร่มตามริมถนน หรือตามบ้านเรือนและสวนทั่วไป [1]

ผล : เป็นฝักแบน กว้าง 1-1.5 ซม. ยาว 20-30 ซม. ขนเกลี้ยงเป็นร่อง [3]

ฝัก : มีลักษณะแบนอวบและยาวประมาณ 15 ซม. [1]

เมล็ด : มี 20-30 เมล็ด รูปไข่ กว้าง 5-6 มม. ยาว 10-15 มม. แบน สีน้ำตาลอ่อน [3]

ใบ : เป็นใบประกอบยอดคู่ ใบย่อยมี 7-10 คู่ รูปขอบขนานแกมรูปไข่ กว้าง 1-2 ซม. ยาว 3-7 ซม. ปลายกลม หรือเว้าเป็นแอ่งเล็กน้อย และมีติ่งแหลมโคนกลม ด้านบนเกลี้ยง ด้านล่างค่อนข้างมีขนนุ่ม แกนกลางช่อใบยาว 10-25 ซม. ก้านใบยาว 2-3 ซม. หูใบขนาดเล็ก เรียวแหลม หลุดร่วงง่าย [3]

ใบ : เป็นใบรวมซึ่งประกอบด้วยใบย่อยประมาณ 20 ใบ ลักษณะใบจะดกหนาทึบ คล้ายใบทรงบาดาลหรือใบของชุมเห็ดไทย [1]

สมุนไพรพวกนี้ ให้ใช้ในขณะที่มีอาการท้องผูก ห้ามใช้ประจำ เพื่อจุดประสงค์ต้องการให้มีรูปร่างระหง และควรรับประทานยาสมุนไพรก่อนนอน ขนาดที่ใช้อาจเพิ่มหรือลดลงได้เล็กน้อยขึ้นอยู่กับ "อายุ" เด็ก หรือผู้ที่ธาตุเบาควรใช้ขนาดลดลง

ผู้ที่ธาตุเบาควรใช้ขนาดลดลง ถ้าผู้ที่อยู่ในวัยหนุ่มสาว หรือ ธาตุหนัก ควรเพิ่มสมุนไพรเล็กน้อย

ห้ามใช้ในบุคคลที่กำลังตั้งครรภ์แก่

พบรายงานอาการอันไม่พึงประสงค์จากการใช้ยาสมุนไพรขี้เหล็ก เกี่ยวกับภาวะตับอักเสบเฉียบพลัน ได้แก่ความผิดปกติของ Liver function test (AST, ALT, Total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase สูงกว่าปกติ, อาการดีซ่าน, อึดอัดในช่องท้อง)

คนที่เป็นความดันโลหิตสูงห้ามใช้

ใช้เป็นยาช่วยใหนอนหลับไม่ควรต้ม เพราะจะทำให้สารที่ออกฤทธิ์ละลายน้ำ
