ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อกระจาย ช่อดอกย่อยมีก้านออกเป็นคู่ ๆ ในแต่ละคู่จะมีใบประดับรองรับ [5]

ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อแตกกิ่งก้านกระจาย โค้งลง ช่อดอกย่อยแบนออกเป็นคู่ ช่อหนึ่งไม่มีก้านและอีกช่อหนึ่งมีก้าน ช่อดอกย่อยที่ไม่มีก้าน ยาว 6 มม. รูปยาวแคบกาบช่อดอกย่อย (glume) อันล่าง ค่อนข้างแบนไปยังโคน หรือด้านหลังแบนลง เป็นสันและสันค่อย ๆ แคบไปยังปลายประมาณ 2 ใน 3 สันจักเป็นซี่ฟัน ไม่เห็นเส้นตามยาว อันบนค่อนข้างเป็นรูปเรือ เป็นสันตอนบน มีเส้นตามยาว 1 เส้น กาบล่างของดอก (lemma) บาง ยาวพอ ๆ กับกาบช่อดอกย่อย มักมีเส้นตามยาว 2 เส้น ขอบเรียบ กาบอันบนสั้นกว่าเล็กน้อย ส่วนช่อดอกย่อยที่มีก้าน มีขนาดสั้นกว่าเล็กน้อย กาบช่อดอกย่อยอันล่างมีเส้นตามยาว 5 เส้น หรือมากกว่า อาจจะเหมือนกับช่อดอกย่อยที่ไม่มีก้าน แต่ดอกย่อยอันบนเป็นดอกเพศผู้ [2] [4]

ต้น : เป็นพรรณไม้ล้มลุก ขึ้นเป็นกอใหญ่ สูงประมาณ 1 เมตร ลักษณะของลำต้นเป็นรูปทรงกระบอก แข็ง เกลี้ยง และตามปล้องมักมีไขปกคลุมอยู่ เป็นพรรณไม้ที่มีอายุหลายปี [5]

ต้น : เป็นไม้ล้มลุก จำพวกหญ้า มีอายุหลายปี ลำต้นเป็นกอใหญ่ สูงประมาณ 2 เมตร แตกใบหนาแน่นที่โคนต้น มีกลิ่นหอม กาบใบเล็กเรียว เกลี้ยง ใบรูปแถบเรียวแหลม กว้าง 2 ซม. ยาวถึง 90 ซม. ลิ้นใบยาว 2 มม. [2] [4]

ถิ่นที่พบ : เป็นพืชในเขตร้อน และกึ่งเขตร้อนของทวีปเอเชียและแอฟริกา [9]

ใบ : ใบเดี่ยว แตกใบออกเป็นกอ รูปขอบขนาน ปลายใบแหลม และผิวใบจะสากมือทั้งสองด้าน เส้นกลางใบแข็ง ขอบใบจะมีขนขึ้นอยู่เล็กน้อย มีสีเขียวกว้างประมาณ 2 ซม. ยาว 2-3 ฟุต [5]

ควรเจือจางน้ำมันหอมระเหยก่อนใช้กับผิวหนังโดยตรง

อาจเกิดการระคายเคืองสำหรับผู้ที่มีผิวแพ้ง่าย

อาจทำให้เกิดอาการข้างเคียง คือ ทำให้นอนไม่หลับ

ระวังการใช้ในคนที่เป็นต้อหิน (glaucoma) เนื่องจาก citral จะทำให้ความดันในลูกตาเพิ่มขึ้น (10)

น้ำมันตะไคร้เมื่อผสมในน้ำหอม โดยผสมน้ำมันตะไคร้ (0.8%) พบว่ามีอาการแพ้ แต่อาจเกิดจากสารอื่น มีความเป็นพิษต่อถุงลมเมื่อสูดดมน้ำมันตะไคร้[17]
