ดอก : สีแดงเล็กๆ ลักษณะคล้ายตาตั๊กแตนตำข้าว ออกตามครีบเหลี่ยมต้น แต่นาน ๆ จะออกสักครั้ง เป็นไม้ที่ชอบขึ้นตามโขดเขาและที่ทรายริมทะเล [1]

ดอก : เป็นช่อสั้นๆ มีใบประดับออกเป็นคู่ตรงข้าม และมีใบประดับย่อยขนาดเล็กๆ รูปครึ่งวงกลมติดอยู่รอบดอก ในหนึ่งช่อดอกจะมีดอกเพศผู้หลายๆ ดอก และมีดอกเพศเมียดอกเดียว [5]

ต้น : เป็นต้นไม้ที่ใช้ลำต้นเป็นใบในตัวจำพวกกระบองเพชร หรือพญาไร้ใบ ขึ้นเป็นกอใหญ่มีหนามเต็มต้น ลำต้นเป็นสามเหลี่ยม [1]

ต้น : ไม้พุ่มกึ่งไม้ต้น สูงประมาณ 8 เมตร ลำต้นกิ่งอวบน้ำมี 3-6 เหลี่ยมตามแนวสัน ที่สันมีหนาม ผิวสีเขียว ถ้าแก่จัดมีสีน้ำตาล ทุกส่วนมียางสีขาวขุ่น [5]

ต้น : ไม้ยืนต้น สูง 3-6 เมตร ทุกส่วนมียางสีขาว ลำต้นแตกกิ่งก้านสาขามาก กิ่งเป็นรูปสามเหลี่ยม หรือสี่เหลี่ยม อวบน้ำ เว้าคอดต่อกัน ตามแนวสันหรือเหลี่ยมมีหนามแข็ง 1 คู่ [10]

ผล : ผลแห้งแตกได้ ขนาดเล็ก มี 3 พู [10]

ผล : เป็นผลสด [5]

ใบ : เป็นใบเดี่ยว มีจำนวนน้อย ออกตามแนวสัน รูปไข่กลับ ปลายใบกลม [5]

ใบ : ใบเดี่ยว เรียงสลับ รูปไข่กลับ ขนาดเล็ก อวบน้ำ หลุดร่วงง่าย จึงดูคล้ายไม่มีใบ [10]

ยางจากต้น มีพิษระคายเคือง ต้องลดความเป็นพิษด้วยการ "ประสะ" โดยนึ่งยางให้สุก แล้วตากให้แห้ง ใช้เป็นยาถ่ายอย่างแรง ยางสดใช้เป็นยากัดหูด ควรระมัดระวังในการใช้ เพราะพบสาร 3-0-angeloylingenol ซึ่งเป็นสารร่วมก่อมะเร็ง (co-carcinogen)

น้ำยางถ้าถูกผิวหนังจะคันแดงแสบ ถ้าเข้าตา ตาจะอักเสบ ถ้ารับประทานยางเป็นยาถ่ายอย่างแรง
