ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อแทงจากดิน โดยตรงมีกลีบประดับซ้อนกันแน่น มีดอกเหลืองอยู่ระหว่างกลีบประดับ ใบประดับสีม่วง [1] [3] [6]

ต้น : มีใต้ดินที่เรียกว่า เหง้า เหง้ามีขนาดใหญ่ เปลือกนอกสีน้ำตาลแกมเหลือง มีเนื้อในสีเหลืองอมเขียวและมีกลิ่นหอมเฉพาะ ลำต้นเทียมแทงขึ้นมาจากดิน ลำต้นสีเขียว ประกอบด้วยกาบ หรือโคนใบหุ้มซ้อนกัน มีใบออกตรงข้ามกัน [1] [3] [6]

ผล : ผลแห้ง รูปกลม [1] [3] [6]

ใบ : มีลักษณะยาวเรียว เนื้อในบางและปลายแหลม โคนใบแผ่เป็นกาบหุ้มลำต้น [1] [3] [6]

ไพลเป็นพิษต่อตับ คือทำให้เกิดตับแข็ง และเกิดการก่อมะเร็งที่ตับหนูขาว ซึ่งพบความรุนแรงได้ 3 ระดับ จำนวนตับหนูขาว ผิดปกติจะเพิ่มขึ้นตามขนาดของยาไพลที่ได้รับและพบมะเร็งที่ตับ (hepatocellular carcinoma) ของ หนูขาวที่กรอกยาไพล ขนาดต่ำ 1 ตัว การทดลองนี้ได้ผลสอด

ไม่แนะนำให้ใช้กับสตรีมีครรภ์ หรือระหว่างให้นมบุตรและกับเด็กเล็ก
