ดอก : ดอกตัวผู้และดอกตัวเมียอยู่บนต้นเดียวกัน ช่อดอกตัวผู้อยู่ที่ส่วนยอดของลำต้น ช่อดอกตัวเมียอยู่ถัดลงมาออกตรงบริเวณกาบใบ ดอกย่อยมีก้านเกสรตัวผู้ 9-10 อัน มีอับละอองเรณูสีเหลืองส้ม ยาว 5 มม. ยอดเกสรตัวเมียเป็นเส้นบางๆ คล้ายเส้นไหม ยาวและยื่นพ้นออกมาเป็นจำนวนมาก [1]

ต้น : เป็นพรรณไม้จำพวกหญ้า ลำต้นอวบตั้งตรงแข็งแรง เนื้อภายในฟ่ามมีลักษณะคล้าย ฟองน้ำ มีความสูงประมาณ 1.4 เมตร [1]

ถิ่นที่พบ : มีกำเนิดในอเมริกาเขตร้อน นิยมปลูกเป็นพืชไร่ทั่วไป [3]

ฝัก : เกิดจากดอกตัวเมียที่เจริญเติบโตแล้ว ฝักหุ้มด้วยกาบบางหลายชั้น ฝักอ่อนมีสีเขียว เมื่อแก่จะมีสีนวล เรียกว่า เปลือกข้าวโพด ฝักข้าวโพดประกอบด้วยซังข้าวโพด ซึ่งเป็นที่เกาะสำหรับให้ผล ที่เราเรียกว่าเม็ดเกาะ [1]

เมล็ด(ผล) : ผลจะเป็นฝักทรงกระบอกยาว ใน 1 ฝัก มีเม็ดเกาะอยู่ประมาณ 8 แถว แถว 1 จะมีประมาณ 30 เม็ด และมีสีได้ต่างกัน เช่น สีนวล เหลือง ขาว หรือม่วงดำ [1]

ใบ : เป็นเส้นตรง ปลายใบแหลม ขนาดใบยาวประมาณ 30-100 ซม. กว้างประมาณ 2-10 ซม. เส้นกลางใบเห็นได้ชัด ขอบใบมีขนอ่อนๆ สีขาว [1]
