ดอก : ออกเป็นช่อ หรืออาจเป็นดอกเดียว ในบริเวณปลายยอด หรือง่ามกิ่ง ลักษณะของดอกมีเป็นสีส้ม สีขาว หรือสีแดง ดอกหนึ่งมีกลีบดอกประมาณ 6 กลีบ ปลายกลีบดอกแยกออกจากกัน ตรงกลางดอกมีเกสรตัวเมีย และตัวผู้ซึ่งมีอับเรณูเป็นสีเหลือง ขนาดของดอกบานเต็มที่มีเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางประมาณ 2-3 ซม. [5] [6]

ดอก : เป็นดอกเดี่ยว กลีบเลี้ยงหนาสีแดง คงทนอยู่จนเป็นผล กลีบดอกสีแดง หรือสีเหลืองอ่อน ถ้ากลีบดอกสีแดง ผลเมื่อแก่จัดมีเปลือกแดงปนชมพู ปนน้ำตาลเหลือง ถ้ากลีบดอกสีเหลืองอ่อน [2] [8]

ต้น : เป็นพรรณไม้ยืนต้น หรือพรรณไม้พุ่มขนาดกลาง ลักษณะผิวเปลือกลำต้นเป็นสีเทา ส่วนที่เป็นกิ่งหรือยอดอ่อนเป็นเหลี่ยม หรือมีหนามแหลมยาวขึ้น [5] [6]

ต้น : เป็นไม้พุ่ม แตกกิ่งก้าน โคนต้นมีกิ่งที่เปลี่ยนไปเป็นหนามยาว แข็ง [2] [8]

ถิ่นที่พบ : มีถิ่นกำเนิดอยู่ในทวีปเอเชีย [14]

ผล : กลมโต แล้วแต่พันธุ์ เปลือกนอกของผลหนาค่อนข้างเหนียว เปลือกด้านในสีเหลือง ภายในมีเมล็ดเป็นจำนวนมาก อัดกันแน่นเต็มเปลือก แต่ละเมล็ดมีเนื้อสีชมพู หรือสีแดงลักษณะใส มีรสหวาน หวานอมเปรี้ยว [2] [8]

ผล : เป็นรูปค่อนข้างกลม ผิวเปลือกนอกหนาเกลี้ยง ผลเมื่อแก่หรือสุกเต็มที่มีสีเหลืองปนแดง ผลจะแตก หรืออ้างออก ข้างในผลมีเมล็ดเป็นจำนวนมาก เป็นรูปเหลี่ยม มีสีชมพูสด [5] [6]

ใบ : เป็นรูปยาวรี โคนใบมนแคบ ส่วนปลายใบเรียวแหลมสั้น ผิวหลังใบเกลี้ยงเป็นมัน ใต้ท้องใบเห็นเส้นใบได้ชัด ขนาดของใบกว้างประมาณ 1-1.8 ซม. ยาวประมาณ 2.5-6 ซม. [5] [6]

ใบ : เป็นใบเดี่ยว แผ่นใบแคบ ขอบใบเป็นรูปขอบขนาน ยอดอ่อนเป็นสีแดง ใบออกเป็นคู่ๆ ตรงข้ามกัน หรือใบออกสลับกัน หรือออกเป็นกระจุก 2-3 ใบ [2] [8]

การใช้เปลือกรากเป็นยาแก้ ควรจะใช้อย่างระมัดระวังให้มาก เพราะเปลือกรากมีพิษ

เป็นบิด ท้องเสีย หรือท้องผูก ไม่สมควรใช้เปลือกรากเป็นยาแก้

อาการข้างเคียง คือ วิงเวียน ตาพร่า รู้สึกอ่อนเพลีย

การใช้ขับพยาธิ ควรใช้เปลือกต้นและเปลือกรากสดๆ เพราะสารสำคัญจะเสื่อมสลายง่าย
